The most technologically advanced countries, measured by research
Ranked by who writes the most-cited research in 45 critical technologies, from quantum computing to batteries, China comes first: it leads 37 of the 45 technologies and is in the top five in all 45. The United States leads 8 and is in the top five in 44. Next come Germany, the United Kingdom and South Korea.

The ranking
Countries ordered by top-five places across all 45 technologies, then top-three places, then technologies led outright (on at least five papers).

Questions
What is the most technologically advanced country?
By research leadership across 45 critical technologies, China: it writes the largest share of the most-cited papers in 37 of them. The United States is second, leading 8.
How is "technologically advanced" measured here?
For each technology, every country's share of the 10% most cited research papers published 2021–2025, with each paper's credit split between its authors' countries. A country's standing is how often it ranks first, in the top three and in the top five. Data comes from OpenAlex, an open catalogue of research.
Does leading in research mean a country has the best technology?
No. Citations measure how much other researchers build on a country's work. They do not measure manufacturing, deployment, companies or military capability, which can differ a lot from research standing.
Which countries lead apart from China and the United States?
Ranked without China and the US, Germany (9), India (9), South Korea (9), the United Kingdom (8) and Italy (3) lead the most technologies.
What this does not measure
The ranking measures research attention. It does not measure production or deployment. It counts papers in journals and proceedings, plus preprints for the fields that publish mainly at conferences. Full method on the method page; every technology's definition is on its own page.
